Engineered hardwood - the practical choice for a slab-built valley
Engineered hardwood is real wood on top of a dimensionally stable plywood core. It looks identical to solid hardwood underfoot but won't cup, gap, or buckle when conditions shift - and because most new construction in Summerlin, Henderson, and Centennial Hills is built slab-on-grade with no basement or crawlspace, engineered hardwood is the practical choice for a real-wood floor in these homes where solid nail-down simply isn't an option.
Modern Concepts Design stocks engineered hardwood in a range of species and finishes - the same category designers specify on luxury builds - and you can see it in person at our showroom, 5240 S Decatur Blvd.

Why Las Vegas homeowners choose engineered over solid
Engineered hardwood gives you most of the benefits of solid wood with none of the slab-compatibility problems.
- Glues directly to the concrete slab most valley homes are built on
- Available in wider planks (up to 9") that solid wood can't deliver
- Pre-finished from the factory with aluminum-oxide topcoats
- Floating or glue-down installation - both work well over slab
- A quality wear layer holds up beautifully under the low humidity we get here

Most engineered hardwood is made from European or American oak, but you can also get maple, walnut, hickory, and other species. Plank widths run from a classic 3" up to designer 9"-wide boards. Finishes range from clear matte to wire-brushed, hand-scraped, and reactive-stained European looks - if you're weighing it against luxury vinyl plank for a similar look at a lower price point, we'll lay both down side by side in the showroom so you can compare underfoot feel.

Professional installation
Our installers assess your subfloor first - moisture testing on the slab, flatness gauges throughout, joist inspection on any plywood-framed second story. We then recommend floating or glue-down based on what will perform best in your home. Every quote includes baseboard removal/reinstall, transitions to adjacent rooms, and full disposal of your existing floor. Matching hardwood stairs can be quoted in the same visit.

Engineered Hardwood - frequently asked questions
Most Summerlin, Henderson, and Centennial Hills homes are built directly on a concrete slab with no wood subfloor underneath. Solid hardwood needs to be nailed to wood, so engineered hardwood - which glues or floats directly over the slab - is the floor that actually works in these houses.
Water-resistant, not waterproof. It tolerates the occasional spill far better than solid wood, but standing water from a dishwasher leak or a burst pipe should still be cleaned up promptly.
Yes. Our summer heat pushes strong temperature swings right where a patio slider meets the floor - engineered hardwood's plywood core handles that expansion and contraction far better than solid wood would in the same spot.
Over concrete we typically recommend glue-down - it feels more solid underfoot and is quieter. Floating is faster to install and easier to repair, and still performs well if that's your preference.
